This non-binding record guide helps a supplier review whether a coupling, flange adaptor, repair clamp or saddle matches the measured pipe—not just the nominal label. Product instructions and the project method control the measurement used for final selection.
Start with the real pipe
A nominal size is useful for organizing a pipeline schedule, but it does not prove the diameter at the joint. Material standards use different dimension systems, and an older line may include repair sleeves, coatings, deposits, corrosion or replacement sections. Two pipes described with the same nominal size can therefore present different sealing surfaces to a mechanical joint.
Measure the pipe where the gasket will sit. Do not take a single convenient reading beside the joint and assume the sealing zone is identical. The useful record shows the smallest and largest OD, where each reading was taken, and whether the pipe is round, tapered or locally damaged. Add the pipe material and standard if known, but keep the measured result as a separate field.
This distinction matters across the range. A pipe coupling must suit both pipe ends. A flange adaptor must suit the plain-end OD and the mating flange. Repair clamps and saddles also depend on the local surface on which their gaskets will seal.

The official standards below show why pipe systems are defined by material, dimensions, tolerances and joint requirements—not a nominal label alone. This article turns that principle into an RFQ measurement record. Acceptance limits, instruments and surface preparation still come from the applicable project specification, pipe standard and selected Conflex model drawing.
Field measurement sequence
Use the project-approved measuring method and equipment verified for the expected range. The sequence below is a suggested way to organize the record, not a universal measurement procedure. Adapt it to the utility’s method statement and the product instructions.
Mark the position and required insertion length from the approved drawing. Remove loose dirt and debris without damaging a sound pipe or coating. If the surface preparation method is not defined, stop and obtain it before grinding, scraping or removing coating.
Take readings in more than one orientation so ovality is visible. Record the minimum and maximum, not only an average. Where a diameter tape is used, check whether local build-up or a raised seam could distort the circumference reading.
Where the approved method calls for readings at several positions, label each one along the intended sealing area. This makes a taper or local repair visible instead of hiding it inside one average value.
Note pits, corrosion, welds, seams, coating damage, out-of-round shape and any feature crossing the gasket path. Include a scale in photographs and label the direction of flow or the connection point so the images can be matched to the drawing.
For a coupling, record the two pipes separately. Do not copy one end’s material or OD into the other end’s field. A transition between different materials or standards is a normal reason for the readings to differ.
State the measurement unit on every record. Keep measured values separate from catalogue ranges and nominal sizes. If the instrument resolution, access or surface condition limits confidence, say so rather than presenting an uncertain value as exact.
Use the record by product function
Keep the measurement record independent from the product choice. The supplier can then compare the same field evidence with the documented range and sealing arrangement of each candidate instead of changing the field value to fit a catalogue entry.

Use the OD record for the plain-ended pipe side, then add the mating flange drilling, pressure class and restraint requirement. These two interfaces are different parts of the same selection.
Pair the OD readings with the defect type, dimensions, position and surrounding surface condition. A nominal clamp range does not establish that a damaged sealing zone is suitable for repair.
Add the outlet size and connection type, tapping method and pipe support information. The branch function and the pipe-side seal must be reviewed together under the utility’s approved procedure.
What to send with an enquiry
Stop the selection if part of the sealing zone falls outside the proposed model range, if ovality is excessive for the product, or if corrosion and surface loss prevent a continuous gasket contact area. The next step may be additional preparation, a different product configuration or an engineering repair decision. It should not be hidden by choosing a wider nominal range on paper.
Carry the confirmed OD range, model drawing and sealing-zone notes into the work pack. During installation, verify that the marked position matches the measured location and that preparation has not changed the surface beyond the approved condition. Frequently asked questions
Products seal on the actual pipe surface. Pipes with a similar nominal label can have different outside diameters because of material, standard, age, coating or manufacturing tolerance. The measured OD must be checked against the selected model range.
Record the condition that will exist at the sealing location. If coating will remain under the gasket, measure over that sound coating. If the approved method removes a layer, record both the original condition and the prepared sealing surface.
There is no universal number for every project. Take enough readings around the circumference and along the sealing zone to identify ovality, taper, local build-up or damage, then follow the project and product instructions.
Send the smallest and largest readings, the measurement positions, pipe material, defect dimensions and clear photographs. Do not average away a local low point or assume extra bolt torque will compensate for an unsuitable sealing surface.
