Pipe Saddle Clamps for Water Connections

Create branch and service connections on existing water pipelines.

Product overview

Select by pipe data, operating duty and installation condition

A pipe saddle clamp creates a branch outlet on an existing water main for a service connection, valve, meter or instrument point. The range includes ductile-iron-pipe and HDPE-pipe saddle configurations plus universal and flanged outlet designs.

For municipal water and irrigation networks, a waterworks tapping saddle must match the pipe material, exact OD, outlet size, thread or flange standard, pressure and tapping procedure. Plastic pipes can also require product-specific reinforcement or support.

The saddle body and gasket must sit evenly on a cleaned pipe surface. Outlet orientation, bolt tightening sequence and drilling procedure are installation-critical. The utility or contractor remains responsible for the tapping method and live-line safety plan.

Threaded or flanged configurations; specify size and standard

Typical applications

  • Service connections
  • Branch lines
  • Instrumentation points
  • Irrigation and water distribution

Pipe and connection context

  • Ductile iron pipe
  • Steel pipe
  • PVC pipe
  • PE pipe with a suitable saddle design

Compatibility depends on the selected model, exact OD, pipe condition and confirmed operating duty.

Installation summary

Five checks before commissioning

This summary does not replace the approved model drawing, torque table, project method statement or safety procedure.

Read the installation guide
  1. 1Verify the pipe material, actual OD, selected saddle, outlet size and pressure rating before drilling.
  2. 2Clean the full gasket contact area and use only the specified lubricant where the pipe surface requires it.
  3. 3Separate or loosen the saddle halves, position the outlet accurately and keep the gasket parallel to the pipe surface.
  4. 4Align both saddle halves and tighten bolts evenly in alternating increments to the product-specific torque.
  5. 5Complete tapping only under the utility’s approved procedure, then inspect the outlet and gasket area for leakage.

Frequently asked questions

Saddle Clamps FAQ

What information is needed for a saddle clamp quote?

Provide pipe material, actual OD, outlet size and type, working pressure, tapping method, medium and quantity.

Can a saddle clamp be used on HDPE or PVC pipe?

Yes, selected pipe-specific or universal saddles cover compatible plastic pipes. Pipe SDR, support and tightening requirements must be reviewed.

What is the difference between a threaded and flanged saddle outlet?

Threaded outlets suit compatible smaller service connections; flanged outlets provide a bolted interface for larger branches or flanged equipment.

Can the branch be installed without stopping the main?

Live tapping depends on the saddle, valve, tapping machine, pipe condition and the operator’s approved safety procedure. It must not be assumed from the saddle alone.
